Supporting Loss Toolkit

Helping bereaved people navigate the coroner process.

What is it?

This Toolkit is to help people bereaved following an alcohol, other drug or gambling related death, when the death is referred to the coroner in England and Wales.

It can be a great shock and a very difficult time when any death is referred to the coroner.

We hope that this Toolkit will help:

  • bereaved people to understand and prepare for the coroner’s investigation.
  • practitioners in various roles and organisations to provide support to bereaved people.

Most of us have not had experience of the coroner service. It can therefore feel unfamiliar, intimidating and complicated if you hear that the coroner is going to investigate the death after you have been bereaved. It can lead to anxiety and stress at an already difficult and emotional time.
