In Lincolnshire, Bristol, North East Lincolnshire and West Northamptonshire, our partnership with long-standing lived experience recovery organisation Double Impact enables us to offer tailored support, from building CVs to identifying transferable skills and preparing for interviews.
Our IPS teams also engage local employers to identify roles and raise awareness of the benefits of employing people in recovery, as well as offering in-job support for both the employee and employer.
How Recovery Builds Valuable Workplace Skills
People in drug or alcohol recovery have a range of character traits that make excellent employees, and our IPS teams work closely with people in recovery to recognise, develop and communicate these skills to potential employers.
We spoke to our IPS team to find out just some of the skills that people in recovery can bring to a future employer:
Dedication
The recovery process requires an enormous amount of dedication and resilience, from committing to abstinence to being punctual for meetings and practicing brand new skills, all whilst persevering through the daily challenges of being in recovery. They’re likely to be a committed employee, showing up daily to bring the best of themselves to their workplace.
Empathy
Being in recovery deepens a person’s empathy as it requires deep self-reflection that most people won’t need to undertake. Having faced their own struggles, people in recovery openly understand what others go through and are rarely judgemental, making them a supportive colleague.
Motivation
People in recovery overcome obstacles while maintaining focus and staying committed to a long-term change, all of which demonstrates self-motivation despite the difficulties. This often creates an employee who is willing to work independently and stay motivated even during challenging projects or days at work.
Creativity
Having faced tough times, many people in recovery find purpose in creative outlets, which can bring a range of skills to employment. This level of creativity also allows people to be imaginative in their problem-solving.
Why Employers Benefit from Hiring People in Recovery
People in recovery bring a wealth of strengths and experiences that can add real value to a workplace. Through overcoming challenges and committing to long-term personal goals, many develop qualities such as resilience, determination and adaptability. These skills can help them navigate pressure, solve problems and remain focused when faced with obstacles.
Employing people in recovery can also support a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Their unique perspectives and life experiences can strengthen teams, encourage empathy among colleagues and contribute to a positive workplace culture. With the right opportunity and support, people in recovery can become highly dedicated and motivated employees.
What Our Employment Specialists Say
We asked members of our IPS employment team about what people in recovery bring to the workplace and we think their answers say it best:
I think people in recovery bring determination, resilience, understanding of other people, they have respect for other people, they’re good listeners but they’re also quite creative and driven
If you’re an employer and you are considering using the IPS service, I would fully support that people in recovery bring life experience and a whole fresh perspective to your workforce. They are dedicated and they just need the opportunity.
