Violence Intervention Project

Finding yourself in the hospital after experiencing a violent crime can be an incredibly scary and traumatic experience.

Our goal is to build meaningful relationships with young people, empowering them to reduce their chances of becoming involved in serious violence in the future.

Designed and funded by the Violence Reduction Network (VRN), the Violence Intervention Project (VIP) provides timely and tailored support to young people who have had an experience of serious violence and are attending the Accident & Emergency department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary or are in the custody suite at Euston Street Police Station.

VIP workers engage with the young person at this critical point in their lives and offer support to assist recovery and/or desistence from violence and address pressing issues such as safety and emotional well-being. The workers will continue to support the young person following discharge/release, offering mentoring and practical assistance to empower them to achieve their goals in a 12-week programme.

The workers will continue to support the young person following discharge/release, offering mentoring and practical assistance to empower them to achieve their goals in a 12-week programme.

During this programme, the young person will work collaboratively with their VIP worker to complete weekly interventions and attend positive social activities to offer the young person opportunities to learn new skills and engage in different experiences.

Interventions may address areas such as risky behaviours, social and emotional skills, self-esteem and resilience, positive relationships, and aspirations. We aim to provide positive reinforcement and encourage positive and sustained behaviour change, and therefore help to keep young people safe and away from involvement in serious violence.
