Breaking the chains: D's Inspiring Journey to overcome alcohol dependency

D was struggling with severe alcohol dependency and a history of substance abuse when they arrived at Turning Point’s Smithfield’s Detox Project.

D had initially felt embarrassed about returning to detox after relapsing, but the team at Smithfield's gave them a warm welcome which helped them settle in.

Once settled, D attended daily meetings to talk about their struggles with alcohol and drugs, surrounded by other residents going through similar experiences. D also had plenty of time and space to focus on their recovery, knowing that they were in a supportive and understanding environment. With each passing day, D felt stronger and more determined to overcome their addiction and start a new chapter in their life.

During their seven-day programme and medical detox, D found creative art therapies to be helpful in their recovery process. D's relationship with food suffered during their journey, but the food at Smithfield's helped them regain their appetite and feel better within a couple of days.

After completing the detox, D moved to The Leighbank Project for their 12-week rehab and respite programme, where they learned new skills to live independently and make positive lifestyle changes through weekly group meetings and living with other residents. The staff at The Leighbank Project were supportive and had a light-hearted nature.

The intensive programme taught D new skills to live independently and make positive lifestyle changes that would improve his health and well-being. This included living in a house with 10-16 residents and attending weekly group meetings.

“I can't emphasise how beneficial these programmes have been to me personally, as I was basically drinking alone. Having people around me and working together as a community has aided my reintegration.

The meetings have been an important part of my recovery. When we returned home and faced the usual drama that life throws at us, they taught me recovery skills, mood management, and general coping mechanisms.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be in the mindset that I am now. It's a far cry from when I first arrived in Smithfield and Leighbank.  I am confident that I have the skills to not only manage my emotions, but also to respond very differently to situations that have previously wound me up and upset me."

D finished their detox programme and is doing well; they have even promised to return and volunteer for the service.
