Service Spotlight: Allensgreen Supported Living

At Turning Point, we believe everyone deserves the chance to live a life full of choice, purpose and hope. During Learning Disability Awareness Week, we are proud to shine a light on our Allensgreen Supported Living Service in Cramlington, a place where people are supported to grow, connect and truly feel at home.

A place where people belong

Allensgreen is not just a service, it is a community. It is a place where people are supported to be themselves, build friendships and take steps towards the life they want.

Cerys, Senior Support Worker, shared what makes Allensgreen so special:

“Allensgreen is a service that promotes independence in every aspect of daily life. Since moving in, each person we support has made significant progress towards their individual goals and aspirations. While everyone has their own routines, interests and support needs, there is a strong sense of community throughout the service. The people who live here have built meaningful connections with one another, creating a warm, welcoming and supportive atmosphere for everyone.”

Every day, the team supports people in ways that matter, whether that is learning new skills, building confidence or simply having someone by their side who believes in them.

Meet Wayne

Wayne is one of the people who calls Allensgreen home. This year, he was recognised with Turning Point’s Inspired by Possibility Award, which celebrates courage, strength and the power of never giving up.

For Wayne, winning the award meant so much more than a moment of celebration.

“It felt magical, absolutely amazing. Made me feel incredibly proud and happy. It has inspired me to do more and work on myself and other things.”

Turning challenges into purpose

Wayne’s journey has not always been easy. What makes him truly inspiring is his decision to keep going and to help others along the way.

He has created a boot camp for people with disabilities, using his background in personal training to support and encourage others.

“I like to help people. It’s something that I’m used to doing with doing personal training previously, and it means I can still do that now in a slightly different way while still helping people.”

For Wayne, helping others is deeply personal.

“I feel like that’s what I’m still here to do, I survived the stroke so I want to help other people anyway I can. I know what it’s like to be in the worst state of mind, so I want to help people who might feel like that.”

Supporting people to live life their way

At Allensgreen, support is about walking alongside people, helping them make their own choices and live life on their own terms.

For Cerys, this way of supporting people is at the heart of everything they do:

“Great supported living is about supporting people to live a fulfilling, meaningful life on their own terms. We work alongside the people we support, providing guidance and encouragement while promoting choice, control and independence. By focusing on individual strengths and goals, we support people to build confidence, develop life skills and achieve outcomes that matter to them. Our aim is not to lead people's lives, but to empower them to lead their own.”
