Turning Point Responds to Princess of Wales Statement on Addiction

Clare Taylor, Chief Operating Officer at Turning Point, as responded to a recent statement made by the Princess of Wales which calls for end to 'stigma' around addiction:

"We welcome the Princess of Wales's statement highlighting the importance of tackling stigma associated with substance use. At Turning Point, we recognise that stigma remains a significant barrier for individuals seeking support for their drug and/or alcohol use. Negative stereotypes linked to substance use can prevent people from accessing treatment.

We understand the power of language and how it can unintentionally reinforce stigma. Recently, we launched our Speaking Without Stigma campaign: changing the conversation around substance use. Our aim is to create a more inclusive and destigmatising culture by encouraging everyone, across our services, the sector, and wider communities, to think about the impact of the words we use.

Engagement with services remains the biggest protective factor in preventing substance use related harm. Tackling stigma reduces harm and ultimately save lives."
