Held once a month, the People’s Parliament brings together people supported by Turning Point to represent different homes across Bradford. The meetings are a chance to catch up over a cup of tea or coffee, with plenty of smiles, laughter and conversation along the way.
While the social element is an important part of the group, the People’s Parliament also provides a space for individuals to raise concerns, discuss topics that matter to them, and explore interests.
Over the past year, members have enjoyed learning about a wide range of subjects. Visitors have included the Safer Travel Team, who shared advice about travelling confidently and safely, and NHS nurses who came along to talk about dementia and answer questions.
The group has also discussed how people can get involved in local elections and exercise their right to vote, as well as exploring ways to raise money for charity and support others in their communities. One idea was keeping quiet for a sponsored silence, but as they only lasted 30 seconds, the group quickly decided that wouldn’t work out! Last year, members took part in a sponsored walk in aid of The Wheelchair Alliance, demonstrating their commitment to helping others. They also took part in a sponsored sing and enjoyed singing carols together at Christmas time.
Reflecting on her experience with the People’s Parliament, Christine said”:
“It’s good. They’ve got people there; they talk to me. I enjoy myself. I like making things and singing.”
Creativity plays a big role in People’s Parliament meetings too. Many members enjoy taking part in craft activities linked to the month’s theme, while others stay on afterwards to share a packed lunch together or enjoy a meal out in town.
This month, members are looking forward to enjoying the sunshine and coming together at their annual picnic in the park, complete with fun and games.
The People’s Parliament shows the value of creating spaces where people can connect, learn, be heard and have fun. Through shared experiences, meaningful discussions and plenty of laughter, it continues to help people build confidence, develop friendships and play an active role in shaping the things that matter to them.
