Turning Point supports Alcohol Health Alliance's letter on increasing alcohol harm

Julie Bass, Chief Executive at Turning Point, has joined 35 other leaders within the sector and academia in signing an open letter to Health Secretary Wes Streeting advocating for an urgent response to growing alcohol-related harm.

Earlier this month, it was revealed alcohol related deaths have increased by a catastrophic 42% since 2019. In 2023, we released our report A Sobering Thought, which highlighted the economic cost of harmful drinking, revealing that alcohol related harm costs the NHS over £1 billion per year.

The Alcohol Health Alliance letter calls on the need for stronger, comprehensive government intervention. The upcoming NHS 10-year plan must prioritise action to strengthen the health service response to alcohol harm. This includes key recommendations, such as free liver scanning to be made routinely accessible in GP surgeries nationally.
