A Day with Steven: Finding Joy in Everyday Moments

As part of Learning Disability Awareness Week, we are sharing stories that show what everyday life can look like for the people we support and why choice, independence and meaningful activity matter.

Steven’s day begins with a simple but important routine: saying hello to his cat, Seagull. Moments like this help create a calm and positive start to his day.

Steven enjoys staying active and spending time in his local community. On this particular day, he went to the bank and did some shopping, taking part in everyday activities that build his independence and confidence.

A visit to the garden centre was a real highlight. Steven treated himself to an ice cream and spent time exploring the different plants. He enjoyed experiencing a range of scents and discovering which ones he liked best.

Later, Steven chose a takeaway for his evening meal. Being able to decide what he wants to eat is an important part of having choice and control in his daily life.

Steven likes to keep busy, and it is clear how much he values getting out and taking part in activities. With the support he has in place, he is able to continue doing the things he enjoys and stay active in his community.

Kathryn, Team Leader, shares what this looks like day to day:

“Steven is happiest when he is playing his xylophone, which his sister gave him, and spending time with his robo cat, Seagull, these moments really make him smile and laugh. Being out in the community is also incredibly important to him, as he loves meeting and talking to people. We support Steven by offering choices in his daily activities, using visual prompts, and helping him access what’s happening locally so he can continue doing the things he enjoys.”

Steven’s day shows how, with the right support, people can thrive and live full, active lives.
