What is Naloxone?
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, including those related to heroin, synthetic opioids, methadone, morphine, buprenorphine and codeine. Although a prescription-only medication, any person in the UK can carry and administer Naloxone for the purpose of saving a life.
In 2023, 2,551 people died of an opioid overdose, a 12.8% increase on 2023 (Office for National Statistics). At Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership, we are helping to reduce drug-related deaths caused by opioid overdose in the county. By carrying Naloxone, you could save someone’s life.
What is an opioid overdose?
Opioids include prescribed medication such as morphine and codeine, and illicit drugs like heroin.
Opioids supress the central nervous system, slowing our breathing down and impacting the heart rate. Overdose can happen when too much is taken, it is mixed with other depressant drugs, or if they are cut with synthetic opioids, causing a person’s breathing and heart rate to slow down to dangerous levels.
