Your Questions Answered
Why quit smoking?
Stopping smoking is one of the quickest ways to feel better, both physically and mentally. No matter how long you’ve smoked, even 40 years or more, it’s never too late to benefit.
What you can look forward to:
- Within weeks you may breathe more easily, feel more energy, and notice food tastes better.
- Your risk of dementia, certain cancers and other serious illnesses drops over time.
- Your skin can look healthier, and you reduce your chance of gum disease and tooth loss.
- You could save around £140 a month - money you can spend on things that matter to you.
We know quitting isn’t always easy. Most people try a few times before it sticks and that’s completely normal. Your reasons for stopping are personal, whether you want to:
- feel fitter
- plan for a family
- improve your health
- boost your confidence
- or save money
Our stop smoking therapists will help you stay motivated and build confidence, one step at a time.

Don’t e-cigarettes just replace cigarettes with something else harmful?
There is evidence to show that e-cigarettes containing nicotine can effectively help people stop smoking, whilst reducing the level of toxins they are exposed to.
E-cigarettes are used by the service as one of several options, including behaviour change support and Nicotine Replacement Therapies.
We work with a reputable supplier, to ensure consistency in our offer and approach
If I’ve stopped smoking and still use e-cigarettes, can I still access the service?
Currently, the service is only on offer to people who use tobacco and are seeking to use behaviour sessions in combination with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products and e-cigarettes to stop smoking
How do we support pregnant women?
Our stop smoking specialists would work closely with you and your midwife to agree the best support plan for you.
This may include offering Nicotine Replacement Therapy products and offering face to face sessions in setting that work best for you, including the local Midwifery services and wards.
We may also use carbon monoxide breath tests and offer you incentives such as vouchers to support with your quit journey.
Smoking and pregnancy: what are the risks?
Protecting your unborn child from smoking, means protecting them from over 4,000 chemicals (including carbon monoxide) that are released from every cigarette that you smoke.
Cigarettes can restrict the essential oxygen supply to your baby. As a result, their heart must beat harder every time you smoke. Other risks are:
- - Complications in pregnancy and birth, including baby being born too early and facing risks of being premature
- - Stillbirth
- - Baby more likely to be born with a low birth rate, which means they are more likely to have problems keeping warm and more likely to get infections
- - Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as "cot death"
- - Your baby is more likely to suffer from asthma and other serious illness in later life.
- Stop smoking in pregnancy - NHS (www.nhs.uk)
I’m pregnant. Can I use e-cigarettes to stop smoking?
We are currently not offering e-cigarettes to pregnant clients as more research is required in this area.
