Volunteer

We're always looking for volunteers from all kinds of backgrounds and with all sorts of experience.  In return for giving us your time, you'll develop skills, meet new people, get help back into work or maybe even get a boost up the career ladder.

Volunteering at Turning Point is also a great insight into what it is like working in social care, giving you the chance to see if perhaps it would be a good career choice for you in the future.

What roles are there for volunteers?

From gardening to couselling - volunteers carry out many different roles at Turning Point   Below are a few examples of how you may be able to help us:

  • As a befriender - to access social facilities such as arranging and accompanying a service user with a learning disability on a visit to the shops.
  • Acting as an advocate or spokesperson for a service user.  This is particularly important for some of our service users where they do not have the day to day support of their friends and families.
  • Acting as a mentor within our young people's services.
  • Listening to, spending time with, and talking to our services users, either in group activities or on a one to one basis.
  • Supporting paid members of staff during 'drop in' events within your local community.

How would I know what to do?

Don't worry if you're unsure right now of what you need to do.  We'll give you an induction to Turning Point when you join, and explain everything your role will involve and give you specific on the job training.  And don't forget, you can claim back any expenses you incur while carrying out your work for Turning Point including travel and food.

How do I volunteer?

If you would like to become a volunteer for Turning Point you can register your interest in volunteering by visiting the Volunteering section of the recruitment zone (please note this is a separate website).

To become a volunteer you need to have the right to work in the UK.  To find out more about eligibility to work, visit the home office website at www.homeoffice.gov.uk (opens in new window).

You will also need to meet certain requirments.  For some roles you'll need to pass a Police check and a check of the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults registers.  We may also ask you to provide two personal references.
