Turning Point signs up to the Driving up Quality Code

Turning Point is pleased to sign up to the Driving up Quality Code - a provider led initiative aiming to drive up quality in services for people with learning disabilities in a way that goes beyond minimum standards.

Our Chief Executive, Lord Victor Adebowale said:

"This is a great development for the sector as providers should always be doing more than meeting minimum standards.

"Genuinely being able to drive up quality involves measuring success and being transparent about this. The self-assessment aspect of the Code is particularly helpful, as it will allow us to show how we are achieving the Code's ambitions and putting the people we support at the centre of our work."

Our Managing Director for Learning Disability Services, Fiona Ritchie said:

"The Code's vision is strongly welcomed and one that we share. Winterbourne View showed us some of the worst and most shocking consequences of poor quality care and we must all learn the lessons.

"We all need to be striving for the highest standards possible for the people we support, as well as guarding against poor quality, which the Code will help with. Its power is in the self-reflection it requires of providers."

The Code is designed to create and build a passion in the learning disability sector to provide high quality, values-led services, a clear message to the sector about what is and is not acceptable practice, as well as promoting a culture of openness and honestly and the celebration and sharing of good work already being done.

The Code has been developed by members of the Driving up Quality Alliance and focuses on five key areas:

• Support is focussed on the person

• The person is supported to have an ordinary and meaningful life

• Care and support focuses on people being happy and having a good quality of life

• A good culture is important to the organisation

• Managers and board members lead and run the organisation well
