Lord Victor Adebowale comments on Queens Speech

Lord Victor Adebowale, chief executive of Turning Point, today welcomed the draft Care and Support bill announced in the Queen's Speech but said delays over social care reforms were a 'missed opportunity.'

He said: 'The Draft Care and Support Bill announced today in the Queen's Speech is encouraging but, at a time when social care issues are becoming more and more pressing, what individuals needed from today was a clear way forward, through far-reaching legislation.

'The delay in publishing the Social Care White Paper and the subsequent result of only a Draft Bill is a missed opportunity. It is a huge shame for the millions of people with social care needs that this has not been given greater priority.

'For people with a learning disability and long term mental health conditions local funding pressures continue to cast a shadow over families across the country. The longer we fail to address the issues people are currently facing, the greater the challenge will be when consensus is finally reached.'
