Learning Disability - what we think:

  1. People with a learning disability have an important role to play in shaping their local communities and public perception of disability. Therefore care and support services should be based at the heart of the local community, enabling people with our support to be involved in and contribute to civil society by being active citizens.

  1. People with a learning disability must be treated as equal citizens with equal rights to high quality healthcare and opportunities to lead as fulfilling lives as other people. This includes choices to have friends and relationships; opportunities to work and study and the choice of where they want to live.

  1. Turning Point welcomes the government’s outcomes focus in health and social care but calls for a more targeted approach for people with a learning disability. Turning Point has developed a unique support planning and outcomes tool (SPOT) that ensures an individual’s needs, wishes, goals and progress can be documented and evidenced effectively while also linked to the performance of staff and Turning Point as a whole.
