Criminal Justice - what we think:
The reform of the criminal justice system and its focus on rehabilitation is positive. Early intervention is vital to prevent offending behaviour from occurring in the first place. People with the most complex needs are often those least likely to access services efficiently and receive the support they need.
Criminal justice services should be integrated so there is coherence between custody and the community access to services. The Integrated Offender Management approach is key to ensuring this.
Diversion is essential to address high rates of reoffending and will address the complex issues which contribute to future offending behaviour. It is best if diversion happens as early as possible to prevent people from entering the court system, nevertheless, diversion can still make a positive contribution throughout an individual's journey within the criminal justice system.
