Connected Education in East Sussex

In 2009, Turning Point was commissioned to undertake a large-scale peer-led action research project. This explored the factors impacting upon aspiration and achievement in five secondary school communities in the towns of Hastings and Eastbourne.

During the time of the project, students, staff and parents worked hard to understand how together, we could build a better future for the students and the school community. Through listening to each other and responding to concerns we are improving the expectations and aspirations of the students and their families.

School Leader, Hastings.

Each of the schools serves a largely white working class neighbourhood with extensive social, economic and educational deprivation. In 2011, Hastings was ranked as the 19th most deprived local authority area and Eastbourne was ranked 84th, out of 326.

Outcomes

We carried out exensive research in schools throughout the area and identified ways in which they could build closer relationships with parents - enabling them to become more involved in their children's learning.

Feedback on the project, tells us that it:

  • Positively impacted on parenting
  • Built stronger partnerships with schools
  • Gave parents a voice
  • Built pupils' confidence and communications skills
  • Increased parental interest and involvement
  • Built stronger school communities
  • Enabled the sharing of good practice
  • Provided a model for future consultations
  • Added to capacity in the leadership team.
