Northern Pathways
An innovation in mental health care
We’ve collaborated with The Retreat The Retreat (opens in new window) to create one of four pioneering national pilots, funded by the Department of Health. The venture, called Northern Pathways, is a mental health service unlike any other, devised to meet the individual requirements of service users and their commissioners.
The service places women with complex needs at the centre of a model of high support community residential services. The service aims to provide a safe and secure environment, enabling women to effectively manage the transition from living in a secure institutional environment, to living in the community.
While the women using the service may have a range of needs including mental illness and learning disability, the service is bespoke to individual needs rather than delivered in line with formal diagnosis. Service users will choose from a range of options so that their support is tailored to them and using a Care Programme Approach will ensure that each individual's needs are properly assessed and planned for.
It aims to deliver:
- Services for people with personality disorders in both residential and community settings
- Crisis services that avoid admission to hospital
- Specialist services for elderly people with behaviour challenges
- Recovery services for those with complex mental health needs
- Services for those who also need medical care
Northern Pathways creates a bridge between secure and local services, encouraging women to integrate back into the community within three years.
