Building Futures

New Building Futures building in South Yorkshire

An innovation in service

Using capital funding from the Futurebuilders initiative we are creating five UK sites to enable people who are likely to have a combination of needs - mental illness, personality disorder, learning disability, substance misuse issues and/or challenging behaviours - to begin to live independently in the community. The places within these services will then be available to local commissioners to buy for their service users.

The five areas that have been identified for these innovative new services are:

  • South Yorkshire (ready for users in February 2010)
  • Manchester (ready by April 2011)
  • North East of England (ready by May 2011)
  • North West of England (ready by January 2012)
  • North Staffordshire (ready by February 2012)

To see the new Rotherham service - The Corner House - you can now view a promotional film of the service which opens from Friday 5th February 2010. This offers a guided tour introducing you to Mark Tomlinson, the Service Manager and also features an introduction from Barry Roberts, Director of Strategic Business Development.

Out of Area Treatments have become a major concern as they take service users away from family, friends and the communities they know, tend not to offer step down pathways for clients and are often costly for commissioners. There is a serious shortage of services for people ready to move on from secure hospital settings but who still need high levels of support.

Service users who require high levels of support to live independently in the community will now benefit from having suitable services that allow them to be supported in their own community.

We are working proactively with commissioners to identify local needs and design services that fit into whole systems, filling gaps in the local care provision. The services will bring:

  • Enhanced service delivery
  • Cost efficiency savings for local PCT purchasers
  • Enhanced local care pathways
  • Increased alignment with NHS networks through collaboration with local Trust providers
  • Specialised services into localised regions
