Turning Point launches the first of five new services using £15.2m capital from Futurebuilders
Turning Point today launched the first of five new services designed to enable people who need high levels of support to live independently in the community.
The new service in Rotherham will support local people who have a combination of needs which may be characterised by learning disability, mental illness, personality disorder, substance misuse issues and/or challenging behaviours.
It forms part of Turning Point’s Building Futures scheme which will use £15.2m capital investment from the Futurebuilders fund to develop services at five sites across the UK.
Turning Point’s Building Futures services will provide an alternative to expensive Out of Area Treatments (OATs). A serious lack of provision means OATs have become a real cause for concern in recent years with service users being put in placements away from friends, family and the communities they are used to.
The numbers of people being admitted to medium and low secure services is also increasing year on year and Building Futures exemplifies a departure from the large secure hospitals that many people are still placed in.
Turning Point’s Chief Executive, Lord Adebowale opened the new service in Rotherham. He said:
“The new service has been built to fill gaps in provision identified with local commissioners. In the impending financial gloom, Building Futures can help to deliver better outcomes for people with complex needs as well as saving money on expensive out of area placements.
“Service users will benefit from person centred services that allow them to be supported in their own community and will not be placed away from their homes or anywhere that is more secure than their needs. This will in turn result in a more independent lifestyle where they can experience choice and social inclusion."
