Shadow Secretary for Health visits Turning Point learning disability service
Andrew Lansley MP, Shadow Secretary for Health and MP for Cambridgeshire South visited a learning disability service in Hertfordshire to find out how residents are being supported to live more independently.
Brickfield Cottage, is run by social care organisation, Turning Point and is based in Buntingford. It is home to a small number of individuals who have profound learning disabilities and other associated complex needs.
The Shadow Health Secretary was shown round the service by Turning Point’s Chief Executive, Lord Victor Adebowale.
As well as meeting with staff and residents, they discussed the Conservatives’ plans to improve the lives of people with a learning disability should they win the next election.
Andrew Lansley said:
“I was very glad to visit Turning Point here at Brickfield Cottage. They are showing how the voluntary sector can provide high quality support. People with a learning disability want to be supported, to have more information, choice and control, building an independent life wherever possible, realising opportunities in a safe, supported service. I was very pleased to see this example of how we can develop services to achieve this in the future.”
Brickfield Cottage is rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as excellent and is regarded as a model for how good learning disability services should be run.
Service Manager, Jane Harris believes the Brickfield’s success lies in their ability to meet individual needs and support residents to live as independently as possible. She said:
“Developing and improving communication between residents and staff members is a crucial part of everyday life at Brickfield Cottage, enabling individuals to make real decisions about their lives and reach their full potential.”
